Sonoma County is large, expansive, and diversely populated by many wineries. The territory comes with coastal views of the Pacific Ocean, massive redwoods, and fertile inland valleys full of cows, goats and sheep grazing on endless green rolling hills. This casual wine country has many variations in terroir that make for equally varied wine tasting experiences.
Benziger Family Winery
1883 London Ranch Road, Glen Ellen, CA 95442
An effort as dedicated to authentic wine as it is sustainability, Benziger Family Winery is a unique wine tour experience in Sonoma. They will tell you they are about three things – family, great wine and healthy vineyards. In 1980 Mike and Bruno Benziger moved onto the ranch on Halloween night and began to steadily convert the farm from conventional farming methods. The culmination came in 2000 as the estate became officially certified as a Biodynamic Farm by the Demeter Association. All of the vineyards are farmed either biodynamic, organic, or sustainable. The resulting wines are true to terroir and the responsible methods in which they are crafted, a fact the family is truly proud of.
The one-of-a-kind wine tour offered daily at the winery is the Tram Tour Experience aboard a tractor pulled tram and focused on the sustainable farming techniques that define the soul and style of the Benziger Family Winery.
Jordan Vineyard & Winery
1474 Alexander Valley Road, Healdsburg, CA 95448
Jordan Vineyard & Winery was inspired by the great chateau of France and committed to the timeless connections of wine, food and hospitality. The founders Tom and Sally Jordan had a dream to create a Bordeaux style wine that can still be enjoyed young. They teamed up with UC Davis graduate Rob Davis in 1976, and his hands have crafted every vintage since. In the early years, the legendary André Tchelistcheff was involved with establishing the wine making style as well! With these unique distinctions, and having created wine at one winery for over forty years, Rob has led the production at Jordan winery with empirical wisdom and meticulous quality standards.
The estate is 1,200 acres in the Alexander Valley AVA of Sonoma County, and has helped define the premium Cabernet Sauvignon based wines from the region. Tom and Sally have preserved nearly 75% of the space to natural habitat full of oaks, ducks, rabbits, turkeys in addition to the 112 acres of vineyards, 18 acres of olive trees as well as two lakes and a garden. A popular and well known wine tour and tasting package in Sonoma is offered here, and is running through this month of October.
The Estate Tour and Tasting offers a ride to remote destinations that explore the Jordan Estate as well as the surrounding Sonoma countryside. Current release and special vintage selections are paired with the estate olive oil and an incredible array of estate garden grown food pairings from Chef Todd Knoll.
Jordan Winery is serious about its food and has a strong culinary program. On their wildly popular channel, you check out how to make a French Macaron (not Macaroon)
