Russian River Valley – Pinot Classic
The Russian River Valley in Sonoma Wine Country is synonymous with Pinot Noir, and the Pinot Classic is one of the region’s premier events. The Russian River Valley Winegrowers have turned Memorial Day weekend into a must attend celebration of it’s most well suited variety. Over three days, Pinot Noir is the star surrounded by a universe of food and wine tasting events that would make anyone thirsty for this beloved grape.
The experience kicks off Friday May 23rd at one of Russian River’s blockbuster wineries, Kosta Browne. Owners Dan Kosta and Michael Browne are hosting a VIP reception at their very new wine tasting and production facility. Followed up the next morning at beautiful Santa Rosa hotel, The Fountaingrove Inn is hosting a compelling panel that focuses on the Russian River Valley as a whole. The panel will break it down into discussions about the AVA’s potential to split into three distinct, and unique, sub AVA’s. (Middle Reach, Laguna Ridge and Green Valley.) Experts will be on hand to help explain why these very geographically close regions are as distinct from the Pinots that come from them. Pinot Noir fans love the concept of terroir, and this event while focus on the smallest details that make the biggest differences in the finished wines.
A two-day marathon championing Pinot Noir in its native soil is the body of this weekend. Saturday and Sunday will feature over thirty local wineries opening their doors to lovers of Pinot Noir for an in-depth look at their take on winemaking. Barrel tastings of the 2013 vintage, library tastings that display Pinot’s ability to age, amazing food pairings, vineyard tours through some of the most hallowed grounds in the world of Pinot Noir, all while being entertained by live local music and other artists.
Windsor Oaks is a must stop in the lineup. For over 20 years, Bob and Renee Stein have been crafting hand made wines from rare single vineyards sites that truly illustrate the depth and range of this fascinating variety.

The big event for this amazing weekend is the much heralded Paulée dinner at DeLoach Vineyards . Paulée is traditionally the communal dinner vintners share in after a harvest but over the years has turned into a spring time celebration. This is the ‘wow’ event of the weekend, as winemakers and producers of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay dig deep into their personal cellars to show you what these wonderful wines can do when paired with the best local and seasonal cuisine. Attendees bring out their best bottles for bragging rights at dinner, and with the caliber of wines in this region, you don’t want to miss this culinary indulgence.
