Howell Mountain Wine Tours

Howell Mountain Wine Tours

Along the steep hillsides and high elevation vineyards of Howell Mountain, you will experience intensely flavorful wines (distinctive from the valley floor) during your private wine tasting tour with us. Situated above the fog, the vineyards are bathed in sunlight and provide spectacular views of the valley below.

Howell Mountain holds the distinction of the first American Viticultural Area (AVA) in greater Napa Valley and is known for producing intense wines from small grape clusters. It is located five miles northeast of Saint Helena. High above the valley floor, the region is home to 45 vintners and growers, each producing their own spectacular versions of robust and complex red wines.

Steeped in history, Howell Mountain was home to some of the most successful winemakers during the boom of the 1880s, and the region made history in 1889 when two local winemakers won a Bronze metal at the Paris World Competition. Today the area’s wines continue to amaze visitors and new releases are widely celebrated.

Whether it’s a tasting on the terrace, a tour of an underground cave or winery, or a lesson in wine production, a visit to Howell Mountain is a must for wine lovers near or far.

While once known for robust Zinfandels, Howell Mountain has been transformed over several decades by growers seeking dark, rich flavors for Merlot and, of course, big Cabernets. These wines are known for big tannins, velvety texture, and often a unique hint of white pepper. Also notable is the long aging ability of Howell Mountain wines. Dunn Vineyards has a celebrated history of creating long lasting Cabernets that can hold on for decades.
