Chef Masaharu Morimoto—known to millions as the star of Iron Chef and Iron Chef America—has garnered critical and popular acclaim for his seamless integration of Western and Japanese ingredients. He has effectively created a signature cuisine that has gained worldwide appeal and positioned him as one of the foremost chefs today. He began studying sushi and kaiseki, honing his craft for seven years at an acclaimed restaurant in his native Hiroshima, Japan.
By age 24, he opened his own restaurant and after a successful five-year tenure, sold it and traveled to the U.S. to further expand his repertoire. Morimoto was recruited by Chef Nobu Matsuhisa to open the first Nobu restaurant as executive chef in 1994. Since then he has opened many notable restaurants across the country including putting his stake in beautiful Napa Valley.
If you enjoy the SoCal vibe with a splash of Las Vegas, the lively, lounge feel of Morimoto Napa will appeal to your senses. The atmosphere is minimalist with sleek wooden chairs and light blue walls, shocking yellow and gray accents float throughout the room in the bright leathers and cool wall decor. Immediately behind the thick heavy door that ushers you into Morimoto’s world, a sake bar welcomes you. Momosan offers a traditional sake bar experience serving sochu and a variety of Japanese whisky. Start out at the bar with sake and “Casual Encounter” cocktail of rain cucumber vodka, domaine di canton ginger, lemon. Both are well presented and delicious, especially the sake, which is served in a tiny wooden box.
Ready to dive into an East / West menu of delights? If you are an adventurous eater, ordering the chef’s tasting menu known as the “Omakase” is a nine-course meal of the chef’s choosing. There is an optional drink pairing or you can opt to select your drinks as dinner progresses with the recommendations of your waiter. If you decide to venture off on your own, the menu at Morimoto is a fusion delight. Ranging from sushi to steak or ribs or sautéed. Prepare yourself for the exotic and off beat, with the finest of quality; ginger from the Himalayas, soybeans hand fermented for 100 years. As well as unique flavor concoctions like wasabi mixed with peanut butter. Beautiful decorations, plates on fire and delights usually reserved for the Vegas shows.
While the menu is-ever changing for the best quality ingredients there are some standouts to get your taste buds set on high. Carpaccio of thinly sliced buttery yellowtail with jalapeño and cilantro that don’t overpower the dish but give it a good flavorful kick.
Sea Urchin Carbonara: Bacon, Quail Egg, & Peas over Pasta. A great item to share of rich and creamy pasta, with bold and complementary flavors. The bacon and peas give it a traditional carbonara taste and the quail egg enhances the creamy texture. The sea urchin on top takes it to a whole other level!
You’re in it to win it when it comes to dining at Morimoto’s so plan on a palate cleanser mid meal. Cucumber Mint Mochi: soft mochi wrapped around semi frozen cucumber and mint will refresh and clean your palate to prepare you for the next courses.
You cannot dine here without a foray into sushi: Saba (Japanese Mackerel), Harabi (Fluke) and Tai (Japanese Red Snapper). The freshness of the fish is unparalleled with great texture and incredible natural flavors. The chefs leave the fish in its most natural state and only enhance the flavors with well-accompanied sides.
Desserts are quite a spectacle in the world of Chef Morimoto. Indulge in the Mango Sorbet: a layered melody of white chocolate ganache, coconut foam, mango sorbet, poprocks, tapioca, and mango bits. It’s a fun an interesting dish that will leave you wanting more! A bit more adventurous would be the Tofu Cheesecake, with rich textures also like a tiramisu and blueberry sherbet accompaniment. Or go all out with the flaming chocolate dessert, for the sheer effect of the 151 rum being lit on fire and the chocolate dome melting all over the plate, with marshmallow and chocolate ice cream in the middle and the chocolate cookies on the side.
Make all your sushi dreams come true and call for a reservation on your next Napa Valley vacation. If you’re lucky Chef Morimoto himself will be there and you can thank him personally for creating a masterpiece of a menu.
