Historic downtown Napa has seen a renaissance in the last number of years and Cole’s is in the heart of this bustling starting point to Napa Valley wine country. With sleek outdoor seating and heating lamps for a chilly Napa Valley night, Cole’s doors are waiting to welcome you. Once inside, the ambiance is rustic and romantic as the 1886 hand hewn native stone building glows with dim lighting, original open truss ceiling, Douglas fir floors and thoughtfully chosen art to warm up the walls. Choose to sit upstairs in the lofted second story for a view of the bustling dining room below or choose from cozy booths or a seat at the striking Honduran mahogany bar.
Indulge in a pre-dinner cocktail or glass of wine to get the evening started as you don’t want to rush through the evening. Whiskey options are plentiful, and so are wines by the bottle. Classic cocktail options abound, from a Manhattan and Sidecar with fun twists on a Tom Collins and Margaritas. After a day of tasting, you’re sure to have a favorite bottle you’d like to revisit. A modest corkage fee will allow you to enjoy a memorable wine while diving into a tasty appetizer. The Oysters Rockefeller and the Crabmeat Cocktail are starter standouts.
Let’s talk food! At this classic steak house meat of the red variety is a surefire win. The dry aged steaks are Cole’s famous dish. The dry-aging process produces a steak of exceptional tenderness
with a flavor that is both nutty and reminiscent of wild game. Their USDA Prime Beef is dry-aged for twenty-one days by Allen Brothers of Chicago. The filets are velvety in texture on the inside and peppered, crusty on the outside. The ribeye with no bone is a fattier version of the filet but no less tasty or flavorful. As any good companion should be, the sides here are unforgettable. The Chop House hash browns with onions and the creamy, buttery warm creamed spinach are menu favorites. Served family style these are meant to be shared and extra helpings taken of your favorites. Dessert is a must, it simply can’t be avoided. Not with items such as bananas foster and bourbon whiskey bread pudding gracing the menu. After all that savory, a sweet dish and well-chosen dessert wine or port is the perfect end to the evening.
From the moment you walk in, to the moment you leave you’ll know you’re in an establishment that knows hospitality. Rely on the superbly trained wait staff and their extensive knowledge to answer any questions of the food and the wine list as well as recommend some of their favorites. While bringing your own wine is an option we have to say their wine list is fabulous.
