Downtown Napa is flourishing; tastefully designed eateries, tasting rooms and venues are breathing new life into Napa Valley wine country. The restaurant scene is especially bustling. A new restaurant from a familiar face, Atlas Social opened its doors in January and their presence adds to the texture of downtown’s dining scene.
Michael and Christina Gyetvan met at Tra Vigne in the early 1990s, where Michael was Chef de Cuisine and partner. They opened their first Napa restaurant, Pizza Azzurro, at its original location on Second Street in downtown Napa. As early believers in the City of Napa Downtown scene, they eventually outgrew the Second Street space, renamed the restaurant Azzurro Pizzeria and Enoteca, and in 2008 developed a beautiful and expanded new space on Main Street at the north end of Napa’s restaurant row. In late 2009, Michael and Christina opened their second restaurant, the Norman Rose Tavern, anchoring Napa’s West End District on First Street, just around the corner from the original Azzurro location. With the opening of Atlas Social in January of 2015, Michael and Christina have established themselves among Napa Valley’s culinary leaders.
Atlas Social has ambiance in spades and imagine walking into a really hip, laid-back, California-cool eatery with an upscale, homey vibe. Touches of wood and metal in a black and gold scheme set off the tasteful and tasty menu that awaits you. A variety of different seating options range from cozy booths and communal tables to outdoor seating with a view of the heart of downtown.
The menu is meant to be shared. Appetizers and entrees come out tapas style and be prepared to order four to five plates to share for a table of two. Vegetarians will find many a pleasure to order. Good luck choosing from the light and fluffy ricotta gnocchi, vegetable tempura or a summer squash ratatouille and cauliflower steak, or you can just order them all! Meat lovers won’t be disappointed with choices like the Vietnamese bahn mi – a flavorful pork rillette, rich salami rosso topped with crunchy cucumbers with carrot & daikon – or the crab toast and polenta porridge with fried egg with bacon jam.
Coming in for a dinner for two? We’ve pre ordered some options for you. Experience the Hamachi crudo and the “angry” shrimp cocktail. As well as the lamb chops and pork belly tacos al pastor. The Hamachi crudo has tender pieces of yellowtail served with preserved kumquat, pine nuts and fresh horseradish. The angry shrimp cocktail has plump perfectly prepared shrimp complimented by basil, chilies and orange. While the lamb chops are marinated in red wine and complimented by a delightful mint-lime marmalade, incredibly tender and perfectly seasoned. The pork belly taco on a handmade tortilla with salsa verde and hibiscus has a flavor combination that will leave you with a satisfied palate. Add all of that to an absolutely stellar wine list and you’re good to go.
You’ll soon discover it’s one of the best spots to sit outside, enjoy a glass of wine, some great food, and mix and mingle with folks in the area. Atlas Social is the perfect place to stop for a light dinner before a show at the Uptown Theater. Right now as the Napa Valley harvest is ramping up is the perfect time come up to wine country, grab a seat and relax.
Atlas Social is just one of many great restaurants in downtown Napa.
